Rose Marie Kennedy

Rose Marie (Rosemary) Kennedy was born in 1918 as the oldest daughter to JP Kennedy and Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy. Her life started as one would expect a young rich eldest daughter, going to dances and being presented as a debutante to the British Court. Unbeknownst to the public, however, Rosemary suffered from learning disabilities likely because of issues during her birth. This caused her to be far behind in her schooling, and ultimately being a disappointment to her parents with their high expectations. After a string of rebellious youth behaviour, Joseph Kennedy determined it necessary to take dramatic measures resulting in the lobotomy of his daughter taking place. The procedure was botched and Rosemary lived out the rest of her life in a home, incapable. The whole ordeal was kept under wraps as an attempt to save face for the family. Not until after JFK’s election did the situation come up, when it was far enough gone that the family could try to keep public opinion of the family high.

Eunice Kennedy Shriver

Eunice Kennedy Shriver was a younger sister of Rosemary who, in her later life, set the foundations of the Special Olympics. Although she claims she was not doing it because of her sister, it is very possible that this was an attempt for the family to make amends for the issue. As seen all over the family, where one member has an issue or is in need of an opportunity, another family member with the resources arrives to try either utilize, expand upon, or save the situation.
